Greeting Card

Glenna tells how she got started in her craft and art...
I was born an artist. I still have projects close to 50 years old now that I created. When I was young I was invited to be on a television show called Art Linkletter and you know what still to today I remember the green room and have vague memories of the actual show. I believe I showed my charcoal and pastels drawings of still life ~ driftwood and shells. I was so young then. I have dabbled in many art mediums and lots of crafts. I like to sew on a machine taught by Mother who was an accomplished seamstress, she made quilts, did needlepoint, dabbled in jewelry a bit, and was always keeping my brother, sisters and myself involved in arts and crafts. My Mother's mother,  my dear Grandma,  gave me a sewing basket close to 45 years ago and I still have it. I use it!

Has any one person influenced you?
Yes actually,  my Father , who is an artist as well!  I used to love to watch him paint and then look at all of his oil paintings! I do remember that.

Glenna finds her inspiration...
My inspiration to create pops out at me from no where it seems. I will be looking at something and then next thing I know I am creating something such as an ink drawing ACEO or designing jewelry and creating pieces. My Garden Tangles are an ongoing project that I love to do for meditation to relax and destress. They can be an ACEO, notecard or bookmark. I always keep one next to me on my desk so that when the moment is right I can use them to continue creating on from day to day until they are complete..

ACEO

Three little know facts about Glenna...
~I have no college degree. I am self taught in the business world. Creating comes naturally to me.

~I was given private tennis instructions by Arthur Ashe in the early 1970's because he saw potential in me.

~I had a rare cancer in a muscle in 2006 which has left me with a permanent disability in my right hand and arm. It has made me a much stronger person today from within. I don't take anything for granted and life is too short to worry! Leave that up to God to do it for you! My favorite saying is Seize the Moment!

Finding Glenna on the internet...I can be found on the internet all in one place at www.soopsee.com/profile/gnormyle Glenna's Garden was created out of necessity for rehabilitation purposes. I needed to find a sense of purpose for being here after developing a myriad of medical problems especially as recently as in the last 5 years.

I am also published on the internet in this article www.hippopress.com/090903/cover.html Crafting Success By Heidi Masek Sept. 3, 2009

Spotlight on AWEsome! Jade Dumpling Sushi Instructions

Welcome back!  This is the 3rd part of the Interview with Susan, from Jade Dumpling!  Today, she share with us her obsession with Sushi!  Read on!!

I Love Sushi Pendant Necklace

So to further indulge my obsession with sushi—you have to check out these two YouTube videos!  How to Make Sushi
the above link shows you how to make a traditional hand-squeezed sushi
How to Make an Inside Out California Roll
this one shows you how to make an inside out California roll!

Making sushi at home is actually really easy. You need to get a bamboo sushi mat which is kind of like a little mini placemat, you use this to roll up your sushi.
You also need the Nori- which is made of seaweed and algae which sound kind of funky, but is really tasty and actually quite good for you.
The last ingredient that you may need to buy in an Asian store is the sushi vinegar.
I think making the rice is the hardest part. You need to buy special sushi rice, which is different from regular rice. It is more sticky and almost sweet tasting! I always use a rice steamer then dump the batch of rice into a large bowl. Above the bowl I have a cute little fan that I blow cool air on the rice.
With a wooden paddle I pour a few capfuls of the vinegar in the rice and with sort of a cutting motion incorporate the seasoning and cool the rice down quickly.
The fun part is choosing what to stick inside your rolls. My favorite is smoked salmon and cream cheese. Sometimes this is called a Philly roll! I love to try new foods- last week I ate a jellyfish and shark fin sushi- it was well chewy but good!!

Many thanks to Susan of Jade Dumpling for taking to chat with us,   and share her Sushi making skills!
Be sure to enter the earring giveaway!  We will be drawing a winner Friday, at 12 noon!!  Also, be sure to join us for First Friday Art Walk on Etsy this Friday, August 6!  Until then...

Wishing you an AWEsome day!

Spotlight on AWEsome! Jade Dumpling Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of the Spotlight on AWEsome interview with Susan of Jade Dumpling!

Where do you find your inspiration to create?
I find my inspiration from all different places. At the moment most of my art is influenced my Asian themes, tropical things - and big bright colors. I read a lot too and love to surf the web and I find so many fun things to use in my art. I love Japanese stickers and use them in some of my collage pendants along with oragmi papers. Up next is going to be a series of large sushi paintings that will incorporate traditional Asian patterns and designs. I am looking forward to getting my brushes out and just experimenting some!

Would you care to share 3 little know facts about yourself?
1. My dream is to move to Maine- hopefully that is where I will be able to open several Jade Dumpling boutiques on the coast

2. I am currently studying the GMAT and hope to start applying for my PhD in communications or business (I haven’t decided yet!) by the end of 2011.

3. I wrote a children’s book and I am going to finish editing it and then illustrate it and hope to get it published- I would like to finish it before I start any other degree program to space my time out a little!

Susan also wants us to know that she is having a Summer Clearance Sale August 1st- 31st!!!

The Jade Dumpling is getting ready for Fall! To Blast out her terrific summer items she is  offering 30% off everything in the brand new clearance section! Plus you will get fun items packed as a fun surprise just for helping her get ready and revamp the dumpling!
Have fun shopping and thank you!

Spotlight on AWEsome! Jade Dumpling

Good Day!
This is the first in a series of Spotlight on AWEsome,  where you can get up close and personal with the members of the Art Walk Etsy Team!  And the best thing here is, there may even be a giveaway involved!  You will have to read on to find out!

First up in Susan, from Jade Dumpling!  Here is Part 1 of our interview!

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Susan Powell and I am the owner and artist behind the Jade Dumpling. Currently the shop is online only, but I am looking to move into a traditional bricks and mortar boutique by the end of 2011.   I have a B.S. of Education where I have a specialization in fine art.   I also have taken many classes in various graphic design topics and have just graduated last month with my MBA.  In the past 10 years I have had the opportunity to work as a graphic designer, a commercial photographer, and an educator.  I split most of my time these days teaching and working on my Jade Dumpling shops.  I am currently working at two local community colleges here in IL.  I am very excited to say that I was just approached by the Elgin Community College to develop the Susan Powell Art Academy there and I will be developing a series of 9-18 fine art classes to offer to the public with the end goal of helping new artists get into the business of creating for a living!  Our goal is to have two gallery shows one next Spring and one next Fall 2011 to show off both my work as well as the students who have taken my classes.

How did you get started in your art/craft?
Like many other artists I have been making art since I was a very young child.   One of my first memories is me and my mom on the kitchen floor coloring what she called little tweedle bugs!   I have always excelled at art and I loved trying new art mediums.  When I entered college I knew I wanted to immerse myself in the arts and I took as many art classes as I could along with my general curriculum courses.  I started selling my work pretty much right out of high school and did art & craft fairs in college to make extra money.  I even had tried selling in a local craft mall.  It really wasn’t until I learned how to make jewelry that I decided to come up with a line of art focused on Asian and tropical inspired works.  I am trying some new mediums again as I just bought a sewing machine and getting into fabrics.  I also am making some handcrafted fine art candles, which I will be listing in my Etsy shop next week.  They are noodle bowl candles that combine candle wax and polymer clays and have a really fun look to them!  My newest toy is a screen-printing machine and I am going to be spending the next month creating a line of t-shirts that I am very excited about.  I don’t have any one favorite medium, I just like to try new things but I know that I will also be working on canvas more for the rest of the year.

Has any one person influenced you?
I would have to say my mom- she is very creative too. She likes to sew and do crafts. She was very encouraging as a child.

This is where Susan of Jade Dumpling can be found:
My main shop right now is jadedumpling.etsy.com  but I also have a really cute shop at www.jadedumpling.winkelf.com/    I am working on my own site currently at http://www.jadedumpling.com/ however that one isn’t quite finished yet!   I am hoping to have it up and running by Sept. 1st.   You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook.

Susan has graciously chosen to host a giveaway!
One lucky winner will receive a pair of Black Square Hoop Earrings from the Jade Dumpling!  These are really cool!  The giveaway is open to US residents only.
